Warm Up Your Patio With a Fire Pit
The fire pit or fireplace adds to your enjoyment of your patio and outdoor living space in a number of ways. It not only provides a source of heat to enjoy the space all year long, it can serve as a cooking source for roasting marshmallows and hot dogs, or simply as a focal point for relaxing and socializing with friends and family.
Here are some things to keep in mind as you design and/or build your fire pit area.
Your fire pit should be made from fireproof material on a flat area of your yard, ideally at least 25 feet away from a structure or tree. These additions tend to be strictly governed by local zoning codes, so become familiar with them before beginning construction or plans.
Allow enough space around your fire pit to allow guests to back away from the flames if they wish. If installing benches or other built-in seating around the pit, place it at a distance likely to be comfortable on a cool evening with a medium-sized fire burning.
When installed properly and thoughtfully, adding a fire pit is an opportunity to blend the hardscaping elements of your yard with the living components. The mix of furniture, landscaping and firepit materials and surrounding pavers can make your patio a yearlong place of enjoyment for many years.
